Bali Plastic Free Program
A Contribution for Bali to Keep Bali as Bali
Bali produces more than 5,000 tons of garbage per day, 30 percent of it solid and 70 percent organic. And each year garbage output goes up 5 percent according to the Bali Environmental Impact Assessment Agency.
Currently we are on going to project Bali Plastic Free Program, which is focusing on recycling the plastic become something useable. In the matter of this we are going to focus on a village first as our main project. We’re going to give them 2 free trash bags which are made of parachute so we can use it for many years in future. How actually you can join to this program? Please keep reading this…
Before we talk more about this, let me introduce little bit about me and about Bali. My name is I Wayan Mudika ( people call me Wayan Jhon ), I live in the village call Patas, in Taro village which is the place famous for White cow ( for Balinese ) and Elephant Safari Park for tourist. I work in the hospitality industry so my daily life is communicated with tourist from across the country. I love Nature; I love to keep Bali GREEN. Bali is growing very fast; the tourism industry is the major sector and the largest industry that the local people are working on in this tiny island. Become a famous and top tourist destination is not always a good thing for local people if they don’t know how to handle the negative effect from this. Yes, tourism industry help local having more jobs, more opportunity for them and of course more prosperity. Beside some of the good side of tourism industry in Bali, there is also the negative things that people sometime (might be most of the time) close their eyes to the current situation around they living place.
Even today there is traffic jam everyday especially in the south area of Bali, where the top hotels and most of the commercialized shop are built. Do people care about this??? Or government takes any action to this vital issue?? That is just another story beside plastic issue that we are going to talk this time. When raining season coming what will be happening in Bali? If you’ve been to Bali probably you notice something really embarrassing happen here (actually not only rainy season), the famous of Bali is covered by plastic garbage just around the island, and flooding and the plastic are along the street. People just throw anything to road culverts, plastics, used offerings and just anything they want to. Once the rain is coming it’s stuck in the culverts and the situation will be getting worst and worst. The resort island faces major waste management problems, with rivers and mangroves forests becoming unofficial garbage dumps. Garbage piles up on river banks and chemicals leach into streams. So who is going to be blame on those situations? Government? Local ? or Tourist? We know blaming is not a good way to solve this situation.
We try to find the best way we can do so everyone will have a chance to solve this big issue in Bali. We don’t want Bali is just a story in the future, Bali as Bali, Bali have something different as a tourist destination, and we want our generation in the future will still can see and enjoy Bali as before.
So how actually you can help us to run this project?
- You can give us your ideas, how to recycle, reduce, reuse this plastic garbage (the practice way and not expensive, so people are easy to do it. Ex. What the action in your country take to solve this issue.
- You can donate some fund to us to make this project success, US$1 might be not really important for some of you, but $1 is really important for the success of this project.
- You can book a tour from us for IDR 450.000/day/car for maximum of 6 people from that price above we will collect IDR 100.000 to support this program. How about if you not coming to Bali? You still can contribute for this project by letting other people know about this. You can share to this information to your entire friend through social media (click share bottom above this post) or in any other way you prefer.
We’re going to make the project report about the details of this project every month or 3 month to show our real action about this issue. Again please share this to any of your friend whether they are coming to Bali or not. We want Bali still be a nice place for many coming years, so our generations can see and feel that Bali as Bali.
